The Spirit of St. Louis (1957)

Reviews and Comments

EXCELLENT!!!!!!!
My children absolutely LOVE this movie. What an inspiring story! The action is never-ending, even in the portrayal of the long flight over the Atlantic Ocean. You get a real honest-to-goodness glimpse of what it must have been like to fly solo over such a vast expanse of water without anybody else to talk to or keep you awake....what a challenge! The flashbacks that show his recollections of his past are awe-inspiring at times, hilarious in others. An excellent movie for children, too, to demonstrate the qualities of courage, follow-through, etc....in all, a superb example of true manliness. Parents, buy this movie for your children.
Once again, Jimmy Stewart comes through with a stellar performance worthy of the history books!

you go to love it
you cant walk away,,u got to see how he does it..and he does do it well.

An Heroic Quest Beautifully Recreated
I first saw this movie when it was newly released. Days of playing "Spirit of St. Louis" followed, and when we went to the Smithsonian in 1959, seeing the actual plane was the high point of my trip. When I found out one of the old ladies who used to hang around my adoptive grandmother had actually witnessed Lindbergh's arrival at Orly Airfield, she was instantly promoted to one of my Favorite People and days of listening to her recollections of the event followed. In a phrase, this movie captured my imagination. I have since seen it a time or two as an adult and found it just as worthwhile.
This cinematic production hits you right in the guts. You FEEL Lindbergh's tension as he is unable to sleep the night before as the rain falls outside threatening to scrub the project. You grip your seat with white knuckles during the takeoff scene. Best of all...you FEEL the exhaustion...the tedium, of the long, lonely trip.
Stweart, the music, and the script do a remarkable job of putting you in the cockpit. When it's all over, you want to cheer with President Coolidge's America when "the Lone Eagle" returns home.
Historically, Lindbergh's achievement captured the Nation's imagination. Somehow the victory of one man against impossible odds found its way into every aspect of national life...including the original version of a Cole Porter love song ["I Get A Kick Out Of You"].
When you watch this magnificent re-creation...you'll know why. Five Stars.
