The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Reviews and Comments

wes anderson is the worst thing to happen to American cinema since Tarantino
He's a truly innovative, original, fresh, bright and captivating film maker; if you've never watched a movie that's older than you are.

There's nothing wrong with taking your influences and wearing them on your sleeve, but there has to be a degree of improvement or originality as well; two words totally void in the Graduate-Ashby-Bergman obsessed world of Wes Anderson.

Scorsese has stated that he enjoys Anderson's work, specifically his use of music. Great, so a guy who hasn't made anything great in about 20 years approves, let's all get on the rooftops of our favorite coffee houses and shout about it.

That's one of the main things I hold strongly against Anderson; the guy couldn't make a film without music if it meant his life. Constantly bombarding people with 60's brit-pop, and original recordings from one of the guys from the one of the most overrated bands of the 80's, is not endearing.

I've kept in mind when watching this that "hey, there is nothing new under the sun; Kurosawa was influenced by Ford, Godard had countless influences who he was constantly paying homage, or stealing depending on your perspective, to. But they took their influences and spun them on their head, made them fresh and interesting."

Anderson is just repeating what Ashby was doing 38 years ago, with Scorsese's use of music.

Nobody is going to remember his work in 50 years, because, hopefully, in 50 years he won't be alive to pay Criterion to release his insipid trash.

i love wes anderson!
i hope everyone will buy this movie . its funny and sad at the same time.if you have not seen any wes anderson movies, see this one and see "rushmore",an equally good film by him.

Nicely Done and Surprising from Wes Anderson
Coming into this film I had never seen a Wes Anderson film. I absolutely adored this film. It's quite wonderful. I love way it's presented, book like, and quite wonderful. We follow Royal Tenenbaum )Gene Hackman), a family patriarch through his attempted reconciliation with his family. It includes Anjelica Houston as his estranged wife Etheline, Ben Stiller, Gwenyth Paltrow and Luke Wilson as his chlidren Chaz, Margo, and Richie, respectively. The rest of the cast is good as well, Bill Murray, Danny Glover, and Owen Wilson.

This movie will turn a few off, but I thoroughly enjoyed its quirkiness and attitude.

The two disc Criterion set includes a commentary from Wes Anderson, outtakes (deleted scenes actually), a number of featurettes, and stills of Richie's artwork (Wes's brother's drawings).

This is a quite strange and remarkable film. It's worth at least one watch. Highly recommended.
