Reviews and Comments

Cute, enjoyable movie :-D
I first saw this movie several years back after renting it as a new release and really enjoying it. I was cleaning out my DVD collection last week and saw this and re-watched it. I enjoyed it as much as when it first came out.
America Ferrera plays Ana Garcia who is a smart student with a good chance for a college scholarship. She is burdened by a mother who believes she's fat and ugly and not smart enough to go to college, and is more needed at home. The story is based around her straight after leaving high school with her teacher (George Lopez) trying to convince her to apply for this scholarship for Columbia. She also goes to work for her sister who is trying to make ends meet making beautiful dresses for Bloomingdales. She also begins secretly dating Jimmy who doesn't care if she's not a size 2. Her mother all the while is a drain on Ana's emotions (and a big pain in the neck).
It's a great independant movie that is sweet and warm and funny in parts. America was a rising star back then and did a fantastic job in this film. It's really enjoyable and hope you enjoy it too.

Real Women Have Curves
It is America Ferrer at her finest. Anyone with old fashioned hispanic parents can relate to her. Highly Recommended!!!!

Fun Movie!
I loved this movie....it is exceptionally well acted, witty, with a smart and biting script. Though it's technically a "chick flick", I think men would enjoy it also (although maybe not admit that). I saw it on television and liked it so much I wanted to see the unedited version. You can never go wrong with a movie made by HBO, and is something that you will want to pull out of the drawer and watch again and again.
