Make up your own ending
I got interested in this movie and had to finish it. Good actors, good acting, good story and sympathetic characters. I had to finish this movie just to see these poor people rescued from that bone-chilling cold. And the daughter, sick, needing medical attention, "reading" from a diary she found.

I wish someone could have warned me about the ending. So some people consider this "arty?" How someone could watch a movie like this over and over is beyond me but that is just my own opinion. If this film had an ending, a real ending, good or bad, I would give at least 4 stars. But I felt like I had been slapped in the face. Ha ha, the joke is on me.

I hope to avoid films by this director in the future. I don't want to invest emotions in a film and the characters in it, only to be shut out, to have the door slammed shut in my face.

More great storytelling by John Sayles
Sayles scores again with this substantial story about a woman who wanders from one man to another with her troubled daughter in tow, eventually ending up in Alaska among some questionable denizens. The first hour is spent establishing the setting and characters, whereas the last hour focuses more on the challenges facing the man, woman, and teenage girl as they becoming unwittingly caught up in a situation that could get them all killed.
Beautiful scenery and great songs help to develop the film.
Sayles has the courage not to spell out the ending or to feed us formula as so many other filmmakers would have. That makes this film a good choice for those who are tired of the same-old same-old.

Don't care about art; the storytelling is BAD !
This is the type of movie that is not worth seeing. You see a movie to see a complete story. The writer cuts the story short. YEP, NO ENDING.

He thinks "that's art" ... let people make their own ending in their own mind. let me give you an analogy. It's like seeing Obi Wan and Anikin Skywalker fight and then the movie ends before the fight is over. And you're left to guess who won base on the character of Obi Wan and Anikin.
That's how bad this movie is.

Or it's like watching a Rocky movie and the movie ends before the boxing match even started. And you're left to guess how Rocky will fight or who you want to win, live or die.

If you like watching movies without endings. This is for you. It's like wasting 2 hours of your life and then 'nothing'.

I don't pay storyteller so I could create my own imaginary ending.
