The Eye (2008) |
Reviews and Comments

Obvious. This was just yet another attempt to put Jessica Alba in a movie. It couldn't be more obvious. Very little story to speak of and no scare factor what so ever! My two stars are only given because lets face it, she is very pretty.. C'mon, you had to see that coming... LOL..

An average horror movieUnless you are a fan of horror movies the Eye is unlikely to satisfy you. Even the horror movie fans maybe dissapointed. The subject is so similar to so many previous horror movies. The only interesting thing is that the donor of the eyes turns out to be a girl with psychic powers able to predict people's deaths and convicted as a witch believed to be the cause of the deaths. Jessica Alba acts quite well. Although science says that people see with their brains not with their eyes ( the eye merely takes in light and transmits it to the visual cortex in the brain where seeing occurs ) according to the movie the reason why Jessica Alba sees what her donor saw is the scientific theory of cellular memory. The eye cells remember what they saw and transmit that into Jessica's brain. I don't know if celllular memory is a genuine scientific theory but that is what the movie is based on. After all this do you want to watch it ? Why did I watch it ? Because I did not read any reviews before. I think it was a loss of my time and money.

Good, though not an "Eyeful"This is a spoiler-free review of "The Eye."
If you're looking for a few decent thrills and a competently made horror film in the "Sixth Sense" subgenre, you might want to check out "The Eye." I saw this recently with almost no expectations after reading some incredibly harsh reviews. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was, and how it avoided what could have been some exceptionally heavy-handed social commentary. No, this isn't an especially original horror film, and it isn't particularly gory or edgy. But it's certainly gripping enough for me to recommend it, and I hope it gains a larger audience on DVD.
Jessica Alba plays a blind violinist who receives a corneal transplant and almost immediately starts seeing supernatural visions. While some of them reminded me of the typical Asian oddball ghosts we've seen recently, others reminded me more of creatures from "Pan's Labyrinth." Regardless, most of them were creepy. Jessica Alba gives her best performance since "Dark Angel" in this movie (I've been very critical of practically every film she's done) and it's to her credit that the movie works as well as it does. She channels the same spirit of alienation that she did as Max on "Dark Angel" and it's hard not to have sympathy for a character who is as isolated as she is by the middle third of the film. As the only A-list talent in the film, everything is on Jessica's shoulders and she rises to the occassion.
Most of the supporting characters aren't fleshed out very well, suggesting that either whole reels were left in the editing room or the filmmakers were trying to capture the sketchy nature of "Carnival of Souls" (which portions of "The Eye" strongly resemble). This helps prevent "The Eye" from ever becoming a great film but as I've stated before, it's a solid nonpretentious horror flick.
